Paving your road to full time freelancing.

It’s Saturday, and I know Freelancers out there with full time jobs have spent their whole day doing what they love- freelance whatevering. Since we’re together in this battle to escape the world of 8-5 indentured servitude, I thought I’d help you avoid some pitfalls that may prevent you from being able to transition into full time freelancing.

ff

1. Stop consumer binging and begin consumer purging. Consumer bulimia will be helpful to you if you only take part in the purging. The more bills you have, the less flexible your income is. Trust me, you don’t actually need $100 sunglasses, $200 purses, and shoes from Zappos.com. If you have trouble breaking your addiction to the finer things, start resenting them. Think about yourself as an unwilling billboard. You’ve paid how much to carry around a logo for Burberry? Also, sell crap you don’t use.  Free yourself from the trappings of Capitalism and declutter. Add your sale proceeds to your savings account.

2. Don’t buy that new car. Yeah, yeah, I know the KBB value of your already paid off car is, like, $4,500 and your transmission will cost $1,000 to fix, but that doesn’t mean it’s wise to buy a new car with a new $400 a month car payment. Seriously, if you pay $2,000 on maintenance and repair for your current car each year you’ll only end up spending $166 per month. The $234 that you save can be added to your savings account. With my car, I only spend about $700 a year on repair and maintenance, so my $2,000 estimate is probably higher than average.

3. Stop using the credit cards. I mean, really. What is your priority? Ensuring a life of freedom with a fulfilling career with amazing potential, or an impulse buy at the mall to satisfy the now? Give yourself an allowance each week. Carry this amount as cash and leave the cards at home.

Hey Katy! I can not begin to tell you how much it scares me to hear you say people thought you were nuts!! What happened to living WITHIN your means rather than within someone else’s???

Hi yanjiaren- debt is such a stress, and I think a lot of people think they have no choice BUT to be saddled with it.
