I’m a writer, you’re a writer, everyone’s a writer…writer…
Are you a writer only if you create fiction work? Do you consider yourself a writer if you don’t write journalistic pieces? What makes a writer a writer? Is every blogger a writer and is every writer a blogger? Does it annoy you when a blogger dedicates his or her first paragraph entirely to rhetorical questions?

In deciding whether or not to market yourself as a “writer”, does it matter what kind of writing you do? No, it doesn’t. When you limit your definition of a writer to only include those who write fiction, publish books, or are journalists, you limit your own success. Don’t forfeit your potential by discounting or undervaluing your experience.

I am a business writer. The bulk of my writing history (as well as current work) comes from creating manuals, marketing copy, web content, sales letters and presentations for businesses. I don’t write much fiction (read one satirical piece here), I write a few pieces for a community newspaper, write some funny essays and I write some How to articles. Think about your own history. What writing have you done that you may not have included on your resume? What kind of niche can that help you fill? Think about your own
