Life happens while you make other plans

I’m getting ready for school to start on Monday. I generally enjoy taking classes but this semester I have no classes in lit or writing so I’m not looking forward to it. Getting my BA has become increasingly important to me over the years. I have always been successful in spite of my decision to leave college as a freshman. I may have had to find alternative routes to success but I have never found not having a degree to be an impediment.

So why bother with the degree? As an adult student I think I have an opportunity to “get” more out of college than I did as a 21 year-old who hadn’t found herself yet. My real life learning (can I call that street cred?) and experiences help me to process the information better. The lessons carry a different depth to them and more relevance.

So here I sit surrounded by pencils, spiral bound notebooks and folders. Scheduling my freelance assignments while anticipating due dates for homework & papers I’ll need to do, and working on continuing education credits for my day job. It seems like a lot- but it is worth it. It is also a good lesson. You do not have to fit into society’s molds to achieve success. Don’t take the path oft traveled and assume it is your ticket to making it. It isn’t. If you are going to do something, do it for you. Period.
